Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed will be keynote speaker at Six Semnses Eco Symnposium at Sovena Fushi in the Maldives Oct. 7-10.

It wasn’t that long ago that Nasheed made headlines by pledging his country’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2020 and pleaded with industrialized countries to follow his lead before his island country disappears under rising ocean levels.

He will be one of 20 well known speakers to participate in the symposium, being sponsored by Six Senses. The symposium will hear from leading consultants, environmentalists, international policymakers and visionaries such as clean energy specialists – Lounette Dyer of Soledo Energy; Jeremy Leggett of Solar Century; Eric Scotto of Akuo Energy Group; Dr. Anthony Michaels of Proteus Environmental Technologies.

Mike Mason, founder of Climate Care, a market leader in the development of projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, will focus on the economics of low carbon financing.

The list also includes Mark Lynas, Nasheed’s special adviser on climate change. His bestseller, Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet, received the Royal Society prize for science books in 2007. It was turned into a documentary by National Geographic.

The symposium will also hear from the airline industry and its plans to improve their carbon footprint from Jonathon Counsell, British Airways head of the environment; and World Economic Forum’s aviation expert Thea Chiesa.

The symposium will include practical examples of eco technology “to inspire” travel and tourism leaders attending the four-day conference.
